Bookbinding Classes

We are pleased to announce the introduction of bookbinding classes at Downie Allison Downie.

2 Day Classes

Introduction to Bookbinding

10am - 4pm (2 consecutive Saturdays)

This 2 day beginner class covers the basic principals of bookbinding including grain direction and how to handle adhesives and bookbinding materials with confidence.

The class will be a mixture of demonstrations and practical exercises, and each student shall produce at least two books by the end of the course.

All materials and tools required will be supplied for use during the course. A selection of materials and tools will be available to purchase for those who wish to hone their skills further at home.

£130 (includes light lunch)



Intermediate Bookbinding

10am - 4pm (2 consecutive Saturdays)

This class follows on from the beginner class with more advanced bookbinding skills being taught, including, working with leather and some different materials, hand finnishing/tooling, rounding and jointing a book and some other sewing methods.

1 Day Classes

Box Making

10am - 4pm (Saturday)

In this 1 day class you will learn to make a bespoke archival box in a range of materials. You will be taught how to measure, size and prepare your materials and all the ins and outs of box-making.

£70 (includes light lunch)



Book Repair

10am - 4pm (Saturday)

In this 1 day class you will learn the essentials of book repair and gain valuable knowledge on how to preserve and enhance old books in need of some tlc.

Hand Tooling

10am - 4pm (Saturday)

In this 1 day class you will learn the basics of hand tooling/finnishing. Using real 24carot gold and other foils you will elarn how tyo effectively put the finnishing touches to any book.
