Our Story

Crafting Quality Bookbinding Since 1981

DAD Bookbinders was founded in 1981 by Morton Downie, following his apprenticeship at Sinclair Wilson and several years working with HarperCollins. He opened the original workshop in the historic Baltic Chambers in Glasgow, driven by a passion for traditional craftsmanship and the art of fine bookbinding.

As the company grew, it found homes in various locations across the city before settling in Partick, in Glasgow’s West End, where we've proudly operated for the past 15 years.

In 2012, the business passed to the next generation. Morton’s daughter, Lesley-Anne, and her husband, Robin Mitchell, took over the reins alongside long-time business partner, John Allison. Together, they have continued to grow and evolve the business while staying true to its roots in quality, care, and craftsmanship.

Over the decades, DAD Bookbinders has earned a strong reputation for exceptional customer service and beautifully handcrafted products. Our dedicated team is fully trained in every aspect of bookbinding, setting us apart in our field.

Today, we work with a wide range of clients — from major institutions like Library Special Collections to individual artists and personal projects — always delivering the same attention to detail, no matter the scale.
